JEE Main 2027: Exam Dates, Pattern, Eligibility, Registration & Guidelines

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is the main entrance test for admission to B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning courses at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs), and it is the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, the gateway to the IITs

Latest update: NTA's 2027 exam calendar lists JEE Main Session 1 for January 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30, 2027, with January 31 kept as a buffer date. The dates are tentative and may be revised. The information bulletin and registration dates are still awaited.

The syllabus is based on NCERT Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The last major revision was in 2024, and no new additions have been announced for 2027. Follow the official syllabus in the NTA bulletin once released.

• Qualifying exam: Passed (or appearing in) Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Mathematics, and one of Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / a technical vocational subject.
• Age limit: No age limit to appear in JEE Main.
• Attempts: Up to 3 consecutive years from the year of passing Class 12.
• Admission criteria: Individual institutes (NITs, IIITs, etc.) and JoSAA set their own criteria, so check them separately from JEE Main eligibility.

Apply only on the official NTA JEE Main website: jeemain.nta.nic.in. Also see nta.ac.in for notices.

1. Open the New Registration link and enter your basic personal and contact details to get login credentials.
2. Log in, fill in the application form and choose your exam cities.
3. Upload a scanned photograph and signature in the correct size and format.
4. Pay the application fee online by net banking, UPI or credit/debit card.
5. Submit the form and download the confirmation page.

Keep ready: Class 10 and 12 details, category certificate (if applicable), Aadhaar/APAAR ID, a working mobile number and email.

Marking scheme :+4 for a correct answer, -1 for an incorrect MCQ (check the bulletin for numerical-question marking)

• Keep your registered mobile number and email active for NTA OTPs and updates.
• Download the Advance City Intimation Slip to know your exam city, then the Admit Card for the exact venue, as early as it is released.
• Carry a printed admit card and a valid photo ID.
• Expect facial biometric authentication at the centre. NTA introduced it from the 2026 January session.
• Calculators are not allowed, physical or virtual. Rough work is done on sheets provided at the centre.
• Reach the centre before the reporting time on your admit card.
• Follow the dress code and prohibited-items list printed in the bulletin and admit card.

JEE Main is the entrance exam for NITs, IIITs and CFTIs and the qualifier for JEE Advanced. Only the top 2.5 lakh Paper 1 candidates (across categories) become eligible to register for JEE Advanced, which is the gateway to the IITs.

1. Finish NCERT-based theory first, then move to problem-solving.
2. Practise chapter-wise previous year questions to find high-weightage topics.
3. Take full-length timed CBT mocks. Attempt numerical questions carefully, since they have no options to guess from.
4. Maintain an error log and revise it weekly.

When is JEE Main 2027 Session 1? NTA's calendar lists January 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30, 2027, with January 31 as a buffer date. The dates are tentative.

When will JEE Main 2027 registration start? NTA has not announced it yet. Based on the previous cycle, expect it from the last week of October 2026.

How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main? Three consecutive years from the year of passing Class 12.

Is there an age limit for JEE Main? No, there is no age limit to appear.

Are calculators allowed in JEE Main? No. Neither physical nor virtual calculators are allowed at the exam centre.

Is JEE Main computer-based? Yes, except the Drawing test of B.Arch, which is pen-and-paper.
